What is ISO 20764 - water in petroleum products - nitrogen purge method about?
ISO 20764 is an International Standard that discusses methods of testing for petroleum and its products. Petroleum and its products are materials derived from crude oil (petroleum) as it is processed in oil refineries. Unlike petrochemicals, which are a collection of well-defined usually pure organic compounds, petroleum products are complex mixtures.
ISO 20764 specifies two procedures for the preparation of test portions from petroleum and related products boiling above 200 °C, which can then be used for the determination of total water content within the range of 3 mg/kg to 1 000 mg/kg. The method is applicable to unused and used lubricating oils, non-aqueous hydraulic fluids, and high-boiling solvents. The test portions generated by these procedures are suitable for standard Karl Fischer water-content determinations, such as those described in ISO 6296.
Who is ISO 20764 - water in petroleum products - nitrogen purge method for?
ISO 20764 on water in petroleum products - nitrogen purge method is useful for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of petroleum products
- Users of petroleum products in operations
- Testing laboratories
- Manufacturers of the pumping system
- Petroleum industries
- Oil refineries
- Petrol stations
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use ISO 20764 - water in petroleum products - nitrogen purge method?
Determining water content in petroleum products is essential because it enables you to reduce damage due to corrosion, deal with safety problems, and protect infrastructure from damages caused by such unwanted water traces in the products.
ISO 20764 walks you through the reagents and materials, apparatus, samples and sampling, procedure with the guidance on calculation, expression of results, and the precision of petroleum products.
ISO 20764 provides you with guidance on sampling petroleum products and determining water in them using the nitrogen purge method with precision and accuracy. The benefit of using this method is the accuracy shown in the results to determine even small amounts of water. This mitigates risks associated with the presence of water in the petroleum products.
