What is ISO 21809-1 - Polyolefin coatings in petroleum pipeline transportation systems about?
ISO 21809-1 is an international standard covering polyolefin coatings in petroleum pipeline transportation systems, for effective and safe transportation of petroleum and natural gas by-products.
ISO 21809-1 specifies requirements for plant-applied external three-layer polyethylene and polypropylene-based coatings for corrosion protection of welded and seamless steel pipes for pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries.
ISO 21809-1 also specifies the characteristics, test requirements, and application recommendations for the coating materials.
NOTE: Pipes coated in accordance with ISO 21809-1 are considered suitable for further protection by means of cathodic protection.
Who is ISO 21809-1 - Polyolefin coatings in petroleum pipeline transportation systems for?
ISO 21809-1 on Polyolefin coatings in petroleum pipeline transportation systems is relevant to:
- Drilling engineers and mining engineers
- Hydrographic surveyors
- Roustabouts or roughnecks
- Pipeline design and construction sectors
- Pipeline inspection and maintenance team
- Corrosion engineers
Why should you use ISO 21809-1 - Polyolefin coatings in petroleum pipeline transportation systems?
Polyolefin coatings are among the most adaptable coatings on the market today. Extreme weather, corrosion, graffiti, ultraviolet light, physical damage, and microbial/fungal development are all resistant to these coatings.
ISO 21809-1 provides users guidance on information supplied by purchaser, coating classification, qualification processes, coating material qualification, application of the coating system, ensuring the quality and performance of polyolefin coatings.
ISO 21809-1 also provides users guidance on inspection, testing, coating repairs, marking, handling and storage in the applicator’s facilities, enabling effective storage, transportation and usability of petroleum pipeline transportation systems.
Guidance in ISO 21809-1 enables users to polyolefin coatings for corrosion protection of welded and seamless steel pipes for pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 21809-1:2018 supersedes BS EN ISO 21809-1:2011, which is withdrawn.
BS EN ISO 21809-1:2018 replaces the first edition (ISO 21809-1:2011), which has been technically revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- Adoption of qualification processes (Clause 8)
- Added prescriptions for coating application on pipes made by corrosion-resistant alloys (CRA) or lined/clad internally with a CRA
- Cathodic disbondment test conditions revised.
