What is ISO 22081 about?
ISO 22081 deals with general geometrical specifications and general size specifications that can be used to reduce the number of individual specification indications in technical product documentation (TPD).
Who is ISO 22081 for?
ISO 22081 on geometric and size specifications in technical product documentation (TPD) is applicable to industries such as aerospace, defence, automotive, rail, nuclear and medical devices sectors, and also by any engineering or manufacturing organization that needs to produce engineering drawings (using 2D manual drawings or 3D CAD-generated models) in their product design and development processes.
Specific end-users will be:
- Mechanical engineers
- Engineering designers
- Design consultancies and agencies
Why should you use ISO 22081?
TPD in context of engineering refers to the provision of technical information that helps improve the handling, architecture and functionality of the product under development. ISO 22081 provides general geometrical specification and general size specification, which helps reduce the number of individual specification indications in the technical product documentation (TPD), bringing geometrical tolerancing and specification into the modern era.
As many geometrical features have individual specifications which are similar or identical, ISO 22081 will provide you with the alternative of applying general geometric specifications, general size specifications or both. ISO 22081 is also beneficial as it represents 2D drawing views and 3D axonometric views and is intended to illustrate its specification with fully indicated visible annotations.
As a business, the move away from traditional requirements for general tolerances will equip you with more precise specifications and tolerancing regime, where functional requirements are properly defined, and all geometric features are clearly specified.
The use of ISO 22081 helps to contribute to Goal 9 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which aims to build resilient infrastructure and promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation.
