What is ISO 23553‑1 – Automatic and semi-automatic valves about?
ISO 23553‑1 is an International Standard that focuses on safety and control devices for oil burners and oil burning appliances.
ISO 23553‑1 specifies safety, constructional and performance requirements and testing of automatic and semi-automatic valves for oil.
ISO 23553‑1 applies to automatic and semi-automatic valves which are:
- Normally closed
- Used in combustion plants to interrupt the oil flow with or without delay on closing
- For use with oil types (e.g., middle distillate fuel oil, crude oil, heavy fuel oil or kerosene) without gasoline
- For use on burners or in appliances using oil
- Directly or indirectly operated, electrically or by mechanical or hydraulic means
- Fitted with or without closed-position indicator switches
Note: ISO 23553‑1 covers type testing only.
Who is ISO 23553‑1 - Automatic and semi-automatic valves for?
ISO 23553‑1 on automatic and semi-automatic valves is useful for:
- Manufacturers of burners and appliances
- Manufacturers of automatic and semi-automatic valves
- Mechanical engineers
- Product design engineers
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use ISO 23553‑1 - Automatic and semi-automatic valves?
A combustion product sensing device combined with a control unit and a signal conditioner is used to measure the combustion performance of the burners.
The guidance in ISO 23553‑1 focuses on the safety, construction, and performance requirements for combustion product sensing devices used in combustion products. It provides you guidance on the classification of controls, units of measurement and test conditions, construction requirements, and performance and durability requirements for automatic and semi-automatic valves.
If you are a manufacturer, complying with requirements given in ISO 23553‑1 can ensure your automatic and semi-automatic valves are fit for purpose. As a result, risks and hazards arising from inefficient detection capabilities can be minimized.
