What is ISO 24022-1 about?
ISO 24022-1 is the first part of the multi-series ISO 24022 on PS moulding and extrusion materials. ISO 24022-1 establishes a system of designation for polystyrene thermoplastic material, which can be used as the basis for specifications.
The types of polystyrene plastics are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the designatory properties:
- Vicat softening temperature
- Melt mass-flow rate
ISO 24022-1 applies to all amorphous polystyrene homopolymers. It applies to materials ready for normal use, unmodified or modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc.
Note 1: ISO 24022-1 does not apply to expanded polystyrene, styrene copolymers, homopolymers of substituted styrene, or those modified with other polymers such as elastomers.
Note 2: It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance.
Note 3: IS0 24022-1 does not provide engineering data, performance data, or data on processing conditions that might be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing.
Who is ISO 24022-1 for?
ISO 24022-1 on polystyrene is useful for:
- Manufacturers of PS products
- Research and testing personnel
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use ISO 24022-1?
Polystyrene plastic is a naturally transparent thermoplastic that is available as both a solid plastic as well in the form of a rigid foam material.
ISO 24022-1 specifies polystyrene plastics are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the designatory properties:
- Vicat softening temperature: it is the determination of the softening point for materials that have no definite melting point, such as plastics
- Melt mass-flow rate: It is defined as the mass of polymer in grams flowing per 10 minutes through a capillary of specific diameter and length
Using ISO 24022-1 guidelines, you will be in a position to take decisions about the suitability of a specified PS variant for your product.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 24022-1:2020 supersedes ISO 16221:2012. BS EN ISO 24022-1:2020 has been editorially revised. The changes include:
- In normative references, reference to ISO 1622-2 has been replaced by ISO 24022-2
- Terms and definitions have been added and subsequent clauses have been renumbered
