What is ISO 24023-1about?
ISO 24023-1 is the first part of the multi-series ISO 24023 on PVC plastics. PVC is a dynamic synthetic material that finds uses in a wide variety of applications such as window frames, drainage pipes, medical devices, blood storage bags, cable and wire insulation, and many more. The specific use depends on the type of PVC material and its unique characteristics such as flexibility and density.
ISO 24023-1 establishes a system of designation for plasticized PVC thermoplastic materials which can be used as the basis for these specifications.
The types of PVC-U plastics are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the designatory properties:
- Shore hardness
- Density
- The torsional-stiffness temperature at 300 MPa
ISO 24023-1 applies to all plasticized compositions of homopolymers and copolymers that contain at least a mass percentage of 50 % of vinyl chloride. ISO 24023-1 is also applicable to plasticized compositions containing chlorinated poly (vinyl chloride) and to plasticized compositions containing blends of one or more of the above-mentioned polymers.
NOTE 1: ISO 24023-1 does not apply to cellular plastics or to paste compositions (plastisols).
NOTE 2: ISO 24023-1 does not intend to imply that materials having the same designation give the same performance. ISO 24023-1 does not provide engineering data, performance data, or data on processing conditions that might be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing.
Who is ISO 24023-1 for?
ISO 24023-1 on PVC-P moulding and extrusion materials is useful for:
- Manufacturers of PVC products
- Design engineers
- Research and testing laboratories
Why should you use ISO 24023-1?
Polyvinyl, also known as poly (vinyl chloride) or PVC, is a widely produced synthetic plastic. It is a very versatile and cost-efficient thermoplastic of good dimensional stability and impact strength (when plasticized), and excellent weathering properties.
ISO 24023-1 applies to materials ready for normal use in the form of powder (dry blends), granules, or pellets; and to materials unmodified or modified by colorants, additives, and fillers.
ISO 24023-1 specifies some properties of PVC that form the basis for their use. The hardness, density and torsional stiffness are the properties taken into consideration for the classification. Using this designation system, you will be in a position to decide what PVC-P moulding and extrusion materials are best suited for the products that you wish to manufacture.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 24023-1:2020 supersedes ISO 28981:1996. BS EN ISO 24023-1:2020 has been editorially revised. The main changes is as follows:
- The positions of Data block 2 and Data block 4 of the old designation system has been changed
