What is ISO 24134- Safety requirements for automated functions on trucks about?
ISO 24134 is an international standard that covers safety requirements for automated functions on trucks, ensuring safety, hazard prevention and operability in industrial applications.
ISO 24134 specifies the safety requirements for controls and control systems for the following automated functions of industrial trucks:
- Steering (excluding direct mechanical guidance)
- Travel
- Lifting and lowering operations
- Load manipulations, e.g., rotation, reach, slewing, tilting, clamping
- Combination and/or sequence of the above movements.
ISO 24134 is intended for use in conjunction with one or more of the applicable parts of ISO 3691.
Note 1: ISO 24134 is not applicable to:
- Safety equipment (e.g., devices for height and speed limitation) used to override operator control
- Operation in severe conditions (e.g., extreme climates, freezer applications, strong magnetic fields)
- Operation in environments subject to special rules (e.g., potentially explosive atmospheres)
- Electromagnetic compatibility
- Transportation of passengers
- Handling of loads, the nature of which could lead to dangerous situations (e.g., molten metals, acids/bases, radiating materials).
Note 2: The control system is generally part of the truck but can include components external to the truck, e.g., the means of guidance for automated steering.
Who is ISO 24134- Safety requirements for automated functions on trucks for?
ISO 24134 on safety requirements for automated functions on trucks is useful for:
- Manufactures of industrial trucks
- Dealers and importers of industrial trucks
- Testing houses for industrial trucks
- Repair and maintenance services for industrial trucks
- Truck operators
- Truck control system designers
- Service personnel of trucks
Why should you use ISO- 24134- Safety requirements for automated functions on trucks?
Operating an industrial truck requires not only an understanding of the controls to drive them but also the possible hazards of the workplace surroundings. Automated functions in trucks include automatic lifting and lowering, load manipulation, steering and more. Ensuring the safety of automatic functions improves the efficiency and performance of industrial trucks.
ISO 24134 provides information on operator control of automated functions on trucks for safety operations. ISO 24134 focuses on the ergonomics of the operator control as it allows organizations to boost efficiency and productivity while reducing any discomfort.
ISO 24134 provides users guidance on verification and commissioning of industrial trucks including, design check, type testing and routine testing, ensuring operational stability, prevention of failures and performance in industrial applications.
Guidance in ISO 24134 helps users to ensure trust in the reliability of the industrial trucks by demonstrating their safety and effectiveness, and minimize the risk of injury to employees or bystanders and avoiding damage to property.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 24134:2018 supersedes BS ISO 24134:2006 and BS EN 1526:1997+A1:2008, which are withdrawn.
