What is ISO 25239-1 about?
ISO 25239-1 is the first part of multi-series standards, that covers the friction stir welding of aluminium.
ISO 25239-1 describes the terminology, definitions and concepts related to friction stir welding. Here, the term “aluminium” refers to aluminium and its alloys.
ISO 25239-1 focuses on the friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminium because, at the time of publication of this standard, the majority of commercial applications for friction stir welding (FSW) involved aluminium metal.
Who is ISO 25239-1 for?
ISO 25239-1 on friction stir welding (FSW) is applicable to entities dealing with:
- Railway carriages
- Food processing equipment
- Aerospace structures
- Marine vessels
- Welders and welding operators
Why should you use ISO 25239-1?
Friction Stir Welding is a solid-state joining process, that can affect the microstructural evolution and mechanical behaviour of the produced friction stir welded joints.
ISO 25239-1 provides you with the standardized terminology for friction stir welding, having a common reference point for terminology facilitates standardization of friction stir welding of aluminium across the industry.
ISO 25239-1 is useful in order to ensure that all the terms relevant to welding are conveyed in the most effective way that helps you for appropriate control exercised over all aspects of the friction stir welding operation. It helps you improve the efficiency and productivity of welding operations in industrial operations.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 25239-1:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 25239-1:2011, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 25239-1:2020 includes some technical changes as follows:
- New definitions have been added for joint area deformation, operator, plunge phase, root flaw, stationary shoulder tool and temperature control
- Definitions of incomplete penetration, multi-run welding, production welding test and single run welding have been deleted
