What is ISO 25239‑5 about?
ISO 25239-5 is the fifth part of a multi-series international standard that covers the friction stir welding of aluminium.
ISO 25239‑5 specifies a method for determining the capability of a manufacturer to use the friction stir welding (FSW) process for the production of products of the specified quality. It specifies quality requirements but does not assign those requirements to any specific product group. The term “aluminium” refers to aluminium and its alloys.
Note 1: ISO 25239‑5 focuses on the friction stir welding (FSW) of aluminium because, at the time of publication of this standard, the majority of commercial applications for Friction stir welding (FSW) involved aluminium metal.
Note 2: ISO 25239‑5 does not apply to friction stir spot welding which is covered by the ISO 18785 series.
Who is ISO 25239‑5 for?
ISO 25239‑5 on friction stir welding (FSW) is applicable to entities dealing with:
- Railway carriages
- Consumer products
- Food processing equipment
- Aerospace structures
- Marine vessels
- Welding assessors and inspection authorities
- Welder and welding operators
Why should you use ISO 25239‑5?
Friction Stir Welding is a solid-state joining process, many processing conditions and materials properties can affect the microstructural evolution and mechanical behaviour of the produced friction stir welded joints. ISO 25239‑5 help you to use the friction stir welding (FSW) process for the production of products of the specified quality.
ISO 25239‑5 is useful in order to ensure that welding is carried out in the most effective way and that appropriate control is exercised over all aspects of the operation. This improves the efficiency and productivity of welding operations in industrial operations.
Using ISO 25239-5 standard method of demining capability of a manufacturer to use friction stir welding (FSW) process for the production of products of the specified quality help you to manufacture of aluminium structures and products with high-quality and durability and to reduce manufacturing cost.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 25239‑5:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 25239‑5:2011, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 25239‑5:2020 includes some technical changes as follows:
- The concept of three different acceptance levels for the assessment of weld quality has been added to Annex A
- The following imperfections have been added to Table A.1: angular misalignment, joint area deformation, surface-breaking cavity, solid inclusion, joint remnants, and multiple imperfections
- The requirements for personnel performing non-destructive testing and visual testing have been aligned with ISO 17637
