What is ISO 28764 — Specimens for testing enamels about?
ISO 28764 is an international standard that focuses on vitreous and porcelain enamels used on metal sheets.
ISO 28764 specifies a method to produce specimens suitable for testing vitreous and porcelain enamel coatings.
ISO 28764 specifies two different specimens:
- Specimens taken from production articles
- Specially produced specimens
ISO 28764 states that only the specially produced specimens can be used when the loss in mass per unit area of the enamel coating is to be determined quantitatively, as specimens cut from enamelled articles can reduce the accuracy of the test method.
Who is ISO 28764 — Specimens for testing enamels for?
ISO 28764 on Specimens for testing enamels is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of vitreous and porcelain enamels
- Manufacturers of sheet steel, sheet aluminium and cast iron
- Manufacturers of mining equipment
- Testing authorities
- Metallurgical engineers
Why should you use ISO 28764 — Specimens for testing enamels?
Vitreous enamel, also called porcelain enamel, is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing.
ISO 28764 lays out detailed particulars in front of you for the production of specimens for testing enamels on sheet steel, sheet aluminium and cast iron. It discusses technical specifications such as what dimensions of specimens to be, circular or square, from the specimens shall normally be taken from etc., to give you a clearer idea about preparing the specimens. It also talks about the appropriate enamelling quality for the enamelling process and the thickness of the sheets, so that the coating should be done uniformly all over.
Overall, ISO 28764 is useful as it guides the normal processing steps of the enamelling process, which can be easily followed by users for achieving good quality enamels on metal sheets.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 28764:2015 supersedes BS EN ISO 28764:2011, which is withdrawn.
