What is ISO 28927-5 – Vibration emission of drills and impact drills about?
ISO 28927-5 is the fifth part of the ISO 28927 multi-series that discusses hand-held portable power tools.
ISO 28927-5 specifies a laboratory method for measuring hand-transmitted vibration emission at the handles of hand-held, power-driven drills and impact drills. It is a type-test procedure for establishing the magnitude of vibration in the gripping areas of a drill fitted with a drill bit. It is intended that the results be used to compare different models of the same type of machine.
ISO 28927-5 is applicable to straight drills, drills with a pistol-grip and angle drills intended for drilling holes with rotating or impact action in all kinds of materials, driven pneumatically or by other means.
Note: ISO 28927-5 is not applicable to heavy-duty drills with a screw feed or drills driven by a combustion engine.
Who is ISO 28927-5 – Vibration emission of drills and impact drills for?
ISO 28927-5 on test methods for evaluation of vibration emission of drills and impact drills is useful for:
- Manufacturers of hand-held portable power tools
- Designers of drills and impact drills
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use ISO 28927-5 – Vibration emission of drills and impact drills?
It has been found that vibrations generated by drills vary considerably in typical use. For impact drills, the impacting action is the dominant source of vibration, with variation in the result being affected by the quality of the drill bit, the workpiece and the skill of the operator. In some drilling operations, the interaction between the drill bit and the workpiece can cause vibration.
ISO 28927-5 uses a real working process for the test. In order to provide a method that gives good measurement reproducibility, the procedure is described in detail in ISO 28927-5.
Overall, the evaluation methods of ISO 28927-5 enable you to measure the vibration emissions of hand-held drills and impact drills, thereby helping you to keep their vibration emission levels within acceptable limits and improving their efficiency.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 28927-5:2009+A1:2015 replaces ISO 8662-6:1994, of which it constitutes a technical revision. The most important changes are:
- Vibration measurement in three axes and at both hand positions
- New transducer positions
- Improved definition of transducer positions and orientation
- More types of drills and impact drills covered
