What is ISO 2922 about?
ISO 2922 specifies the conditions for obtaining reproducible and comparable measurement results of the airborne sound emitted by vessels of all kinds, on inland waterways and in ports and harbours, except powered recreational craft.
ISO 2922 is applicable to sea-going vessels, harbour vessels, dredgers, and all watercraft, including non-displacement craft, used or capable of being used as a means of transport on water.
There are no limitations to the application of ISO 2922 with regard to speed, length and height of vessels, as long as the ship is determined to act like a point source at the reference distance of 25 m.
All noise data obtained in accordance with ISO 2922 are referred to a reference distance of 25 m.
Who is ISO 2922 for?
ISO 2922 on measurement of airborne sound emitted by vessels is relevant to:
- Marine industries and maritime organisations
- Ship builders/designers
- Manufacturers and suppliers of test vessels
- Acoustical engineers
- Marine engineers
Why should you use ISO 2922?
Acoustic testing is a technique that monitors the behaviour of equipment when exposed to stressful environments.
ISO 2922 is about the tests and measurements performed to prove that the sound emitted by the vessel, stationary or in motion, as delivered by the manufacturer, complies with noise specifications or specified limits.
ISO 2922 assists with the monitoring test performed to check that the sound emitted by the vessel, stationary or in motion, is still within specified limits and that no noticeable changes have occurred since the acceptance on initial delivery or after modification, as applicable. The instruments for measuring sound pressure levels, includes microphones(s), cable(s), recording devices, wind speed anemometer, engine speed tachometer, and other accessories.
Overall, ISO 2922 is helpful as it gives precise descriptions of monitoring tests, test procedures, microphone position, test reports, types of engines, environmental conditions which can definitely be of good help in your business.
Overall, adopting efficient AE testing methods will enable you to detect a range of potential damage such as fibre breakages, cracks, delamination and corrosion in their early stages, before they turn into more serious issues. For this purpose, ISO 2922 is extremely helpful as can help you determine structural integrity and monitor health of components. The products thus manufactured keeping the test routines in mind will help establish a quality benchmark that can improve credibility and trust in your product or service for the end-user.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 2922:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 2922:2000+A1:2013, which is withdrawn.
BS EN ISO 2922:2020 replaces the second edition (ISO 2922:2000), which has been technically revised. BS EN ISO 2922:2020 also incorporates the amendment ISO 2922:2000/Amd 1:2013.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- Clarification in the Scope that the document is applicable to vessels of all speeds and lengths
- Specification of: sound pressure level measurement response (slow), in 4.1; integration time for background noise (5 min), in 6.4; and the surf/weather limitation (sea state 1), in 6.3.2, during the survey period
- Addition of a formula to compute the sound pressure level at 25 m in 10.1.4
