What is ISO 29988-1-Designation system for POM moulding and extrusion materials about?
ISO 29988 is an International Standard that discusses Polyoxymethylene (POM) moulding and extrusion materials.
ISO 29988-1 is the first part of the multi-series that establishes a system of designation for polyoxymethylene (POM) thermoplastic material, which can be used as the basis for specifications. The types of polyoxymethylene plastic are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the following designatory properties:
- Melt mass-flow rate or melt volume-flow rate
- Tensile modulus, and on information about basic polymer parameters, intended application, method of processing, important properties, additives, colorants, fillers and reinforcing materials
ISO 29988-1 is applicable to all polyoxymethylene homopolymers and to copolymers of polyoxymethylene and blends of polymers containing polyoxymethylene.
ISO 29988-1 applies to materials ready for normal use in the form of powder, granules, or pellets and to materials unmodified and modified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc.
ISO 29988-1 is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation necessarily give the same performance.
Note: ISO 29988-1 does not provide engineering data, performance data, or data on processing conditions that can be required to specify materials for end-use applications. If such additional properties are required, they are to be determined in accordance with the test methods specified by the relevant International Standard.
Who is ISO 29988-1- Designation system for POM moulding and extrusion materials for?
ISO 29988-1 on POM moulding and extrusion materials is useful for:
- Thermoplastic manufacturers
- Transportation —Fuel pumps and fuel system components, control cables, windshield wipers, heater/air conditioner components, and interior door handles manufacturers
- Industrial products —Faucet underbodies, showerheads, pumps, and irrigation equipment and valves manufacturers
- Appliance components —Gears, timers, and pumps manufacturers
- Information technology products —Gears and bearings manufacturers
- Consumer products —Gears, springs, hand tools and toys manufacturers
- Quality control and testing personnel
Why should you use ISO 29988-1-Designation system for POM moulding and extrusion materials?
Polyoxymethylene materials are thermoplastic materials composed principally of long-chain synthetic homopolymers and copolymers of formaldehyde. The repeating unit in the molecular chain is – CH2O – as an integral part of the main polymer chain resulting from the polymerization of formaldehyde.
ISO 29988-1 establishes a system of designation for POM thermoplastic material for identifying the product and later adding it for specification of the product. The designation consists of an optional description block, reading “Thermoplastics”, and an identity block comprising the International Standard number and an individual-item block. For unambiguous designation, the individual-item block is subdivided into five data blocks, each comprising of critical information.
By adopting ISO 29988-1-compliant designation you can enhance the transparency and credibility of your products across the industry supply chain. Moreover, it can also improve marketability and traceability the product, thus fostering consumer confidence.
