What is ISO 3016 on Petroleum and related products about?
ISO 3016 is an international standard that covers petroleum and related products from natural or synthetic sources.
ISO 3016 specifies a method for the determination of the pour point of petroleum products. A separate procedure suitable for the determination of the lower pour point of fuel oils, heavy lubricant base stock, and products containing residual fuel components is also described.
ISO 3016 specifies technicalities such as principle, apparatus, sampling, procedure, expression of results, the precision of lubricating oils and middle distillate and residual fuels, test report, etc to determine the pour point of petroleum and related products.
Note 1: The procedure described in ISO 3016 is not suitable for crude oils.
Who is ISO 3016 on Petroleum and related products for?
ISO 3016 on petroleum and related products is useful for entities dealing with:
- Production of petroleum products
- Test houses
- Laboratories/ certification providers for petroleum products
- Researchers of petroleum and related products
Why should you use ISO 3016 on Petroleum and related products?
Maintenance provides an essential contribution to the dependability of an item. It is the responsibility of any maintenance management to define its maintenance strategy.
ISO 3016 serves the purpose of defining the generic terms used for all types of maintenance and maintenance management irrespective of the type of item considered for:
- To ensure the availability of the item to function as required, at optimum costs
- To consider the safety, the persons, the environment, and any other mandatory requirements associated with the item
- To consider any impact on the environment
- To uphold the durability of the item and/or the quality of the product or service provided considering costs.
ISO 3016 gives the maintenance terminology that includes required correct and formal definitions, which could help the user of associated maintenance standards a fuller understanding of the maintenance terms used. These terms may be of particular importance in the formulation of maintenance contracts.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 3016:2019 supersedes BS EN ISO 3016:1994, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 3016:2019 includes the major change compared to the previous version as follows:
- Inclusion of digital contact thermometer in 5.2.1, update of normative references in Clause 2; chemicals and mixtures moved from former Clause 4 to Annex B
- Bath and sample temperature ranges have been aligned with ASTM D97[2], changes in bath temperature and the temperatures at which the test jars are moved to the batch with the next lower temperature have over the years (1994 up to the time of publication of this document) not led to the observation of a bias versus test results obtained with the former edition
- Option for using automatic apparatus has been removed as being non-applicable; automated apparatus is no longer being addressed as its use is at the discretion of the laboratory and the precision does not apply to that equipment
- Addition of sampling instructions in Clause 6; alignment of Clause 9 on precision, with ASTM D97[2] and introduction of Annex C; addition of a Bibliography
