What is ISO 3251 - Determination of non-volatile-matter about?
ISO 3251 specifies a method for determining the non-volatile-matter content by mass of paints, varnishes, binders for paints and varnishes, polymer dispersions, and condensation resins such as phenolic resins (resols, novolak solutions, etc.).
ISO 3251 is also applicable to formulated dispersions containing fillers, pigments, and other auxiliaries (e.g., thickeners, film-forming agents).
NOTE 1: ISO 3251 is suitable for synthetic rubber lattices, providing heating for a specific period.
Who is ISO 3251 - Determination of non-volatile-matter for?
ISO 3251 on Determination of non-volatile-matter is useful for:
- Paints, varnishes, and plastics manufacturer
- Paints, varnishes, and plastics testing laboratories
Why should you use ISO 3251 - Determination of non-volatile-matter?
The non-volatile-matter content of a product is not an absolute quantity but depends upon the temperature and period of heating used for the determination. When using ISO 3251, only relative and not true values for non-volatile-matter content are obtained owing to solvent retention, thermal decomposition, and evaporation of low molecular mass constituents. ISO 3251 is therefore primarily intended for testing different batches of the same type of product.
ISO 3251 is for the determination of non-volatile-matter content in paints, varnishes, and plastic to determine the purity of a solvent as well as to measure the amount of micro-contamination on the surface of an item or component (i.e., its cleanliness). Determination of non-volatile matter is an important quality assurance test for products in which the presence of any residue may affect product quality and performance, or process efficiency. The NVR test is useful to control manufacturing processes and ensure compliance with specifications. ISO 3251 ensures the measuring quality of products such as paint, varnish, lacquer, and related products and upholds the limits for toxic solvent migration in plastic food packaging
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 3251:2019 supersedes ISO 3251:2008. BS EN ISO 3251:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 3251:2008. These include:
- A general reference to ISO 4618 on terms and definitions has been added to terms and definitions
- The example of the desiccant has been changed to silica gel orange because the use of cobalt chloride as an indicator is no longer allowed
- The precision data of polymer dispersions has been corrected: the figures given in the 2008 edition were ± data which now have been converted correctly into percentages
- Common test parameters for waterborne coating materials have been added
