What is ISO 3303-1 about?
ISO 3303 discusses rubber or plastics-coated fabrics. ISO 3303-1 provides a test method to determine the strength of rubber or plastic-coated fabrics. The bursting strength of the fabric is determined by using a mechanically operated steel ball.
Rubber and plastic-coated fabrics can be used for luggage, protective clothing, medical substrates, airbags, geotextiles, sports, and many other diverse end-product uses. Quantifying the bursting strength of the fabric helps you to determine what application the material is best suited for.
Who is ISO 3303-1 for?
ISO 3303-1 on the bursting strength of coated fabrics is useful for:
- Manufacturers of products made from rubber and plastic-coated fabrics
- Research and testing facilities
Why should you use ISO 3303-1?
Bursting strength is the capacity of a material (such as a paper or textile) or object (such as a metal pipe) to maintain continuity when subjected to pressure. The bursting strength of coated fabrics is often used as a measure of the multidirectional modulus of the material, as opposed to tensile properties which only guide the coated-fabric strength in one plane.
Steel balls are spherical components used as rolling mechanisms in rotary motion components such as bearings, tooling, wheels, but there are other uses for steel balls such as grinding or burnishing media, toys, and more. There are many sizes and gauges used in a variety of applications.
ISO 3303-1 provides test methods to to determine the bursting strength of rubber or plastic-coated fabric. ISO 3303-1 also elaborates on the principle used, apparatus and reagents, preparation of the test specimens, and detailed test procedures to perform the test.
ISO 3303-1 walks you through the steps for determining the bursting strength of rubber and plastic-coated fabrics so that you can determine if the fabric strength matches your product requirements.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 3303-1:2020 supersedes ISO 3303-1:2012. BS EN ISO 3303-1:2020 includes some editorial and technical changes with reference to ISO 3303-1:2012. These include:
- In Normative references ISO 75001:2018 has been added for the calibration of the force measurement system
- In Bursting attachment and bibliography, EN 123321 has been deleted as it was replaced with this document
- Blotting paper has been added
- The recommendations on conditioning for fabrics coated on one side or on both sides have been added separately
- The procedure for wet test pieces has been specified
