What is ISO 3376 about?
ISO 3376 discusses physical and mechanical tests of leather. These tests are used to determine the tensile strength and elongation of leather.
ISO 3376 specifies a method for determining the tensile strength as well as the percentage elongation at a specified load and percentage elongation at maximum force. ISO 3376 is applicable to all types of leather.
Who is ISO 3376 for?
ISO 3376 on the tensile strength and elongation of leather is useful for:
- Leather manufacturers and designers
- Quality testing facilities
Why should you use ISO 3376?
Tensile strength refers to the amount of load or stress that a material can handle until it stretches and breaks. Elongation in this context refers to the length at breaking point expressed as a percentage of its original length (i.e., length at rest). For instance, if a material reaches twice its length before breaking, its elongation percentage is 100%.
ISO 3376 walks you through the steps for determining the tensile strength and elongation of leather. These tests help you to understand how much bending and shaping the leather can withstand without breaking. They also help you to gauge the capacity of the leather to resist cracking or breaking under tension. This, in turn, helps you to decide what products the leather is best suited for.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 3376:2020 supersedes ISO 3376:2011. BS EN ISO 3376:2020 which has been technically revised to allow a pre-load.
