What is ISO 3613 about?
ISO 3613 specifies methods for the qualitative determination of the presence of chromate conversion coatings as well as the total chromium content of chromate conversion coatings and specifies methods for the determination of:
- The presence of colourless chromate conversion coatings
- The presence of hexavalent chromium in colourless and coloured coatings on zinc or cadmium or aluminium-zinc
- The total chromium content per unit area on zinc and cadmium,
- The mass per unit area of both colourless and coloured coatings,
- The satisfactory adhesion of chromate conversion coatings, and the quality of chromate coatings.
Methods of ISO 3613 are applicable to:
- Colourless and coloured chromate conversion coatings containing trivalent and hexavalent chromium in varying proportions and produced by either chemical or electrochemical processes,
- Chromate coatings that are free from any supplementary coatings, such as oil, water or solvent-based polymers or wax.
Who is ISO 3613 for?
ISO 3613 on metallic and other inorganic coatings is applicable in the following industries:
- Ships and boat manufacturers
- Heavy equipment manufacturers
- Automobiles Industry
- Trains and aircraft manufacturers
- Oil and gas pipelines Industry
- Aerospace industry
Why should you use ISO 3613?
By applying testing guidelines of chromate conversion coatings in ISO 3613 applied to zinc, cadmium, aluminium-zinc alloys, and zinc-aluminium alloys, which helps prevention of corrosion.
ISO 3613 provide you with test procedures and acceptance criteria for chromate conversion coating metal surfaces, which is used to add brightness and as a substrate to increase paint adhesion.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 3613:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 3613:2010, which is withdrawn.
The main technical changes compared with the previous edition are as follows:
- Table 1 has been revised and limiting time has been amended in 6.1
- Analysis method described in 6.5 was aligned with the method described in IEC 6232171
- Procedure for the preparation of test solution C 2 in 4.3.2 has been revised and a second standard solution has been added
- Procedure for testing with test solution C 2 has been revised in 6.5.2
