What is ISO 407 about?
ISO 407 focuses on small medical gas cylinders. ISO 407 specifies:
- Basic dimensions
- Requirements for alternative designs of the yoke-type valve connections
- Dimensions and positions for the holes and pins for the outlet connections
- The dimensions and positions for the holes and pins for the outlet connections for gases and gas mixtures
ISO 407 applies to small medical gas cylinders used for patient care, including therapeutic, diagnostic and prophylactic applications, in hospitals and for emergency treatment.
ISO 407 is applicable to pin-index yoke-type valve connections for medical gas cylinders, with working pressure up to a maximum of 200 bar or test pressure up to a maximum of 300 bar, or both. This type of connection is primarily used for small cylinders.
Who is ISO 407 for?
ISO 407 on small medical gas cylinders is useful for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of gas cylinders and ball valves
- Inspection bodies that include inspection of medical gas cylinders in their service
- Quality control personnel
- Research and development facilities
Why should you use ISO 407?
One of the most common hazards in a health care facility is the storing and handling of medical gas cylinders, in such cases, ISO 407 can come in handy as it discusses the methods of appropriate gas or gas mixture. This can be established with the help of a yoke valve, which has location holes of the dimensions and in the positions for the mixture.
ISO 407 provides you with dimensions specifications and design requirements for a pin-index yoke-type valve for the construction of connecting yoke valve. ISO 407 also provides dimensions and positions for the holes and pins for the outlet connections for gases and gas mixtures. Following design guidelines given in ISO 407 ensure the correct functioning medical gas cylinders and check for other defects in the medical gas cylinders prior to dispatch on storage. ISO 407 implementation on small medical cylinders can be highly beneficial for the medical field as pin-index yoke-type valve connections is a means of connecting high-pressure cylinders containing medical gases to a regulator or other utilization equipment. It uses geometric features on the valve and yoke to prevent mistaken use of the wrong gas. This system is widely used worldwide for anaesthesia machines, portable oxygen administration sets, and inflation gases used in surgery. Using ISO 407 you can specify the basic requirements for the construction of a pin-index yoke-type valve.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 407:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 407:2004. BS EN ISO 407:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 407:2004. These include:
- Addition of a note in Figure 1 on the introduction of a radius to avoid stress concentration
- Addition of dimension m in Figure 1
- Revision of the basic dimensions for pin index yoke type value connections (see Table 2)
- Addition of a requirement for the design of the connecting yoke
