What is ISO 4536 – Saline droplets corrosion test for coatings about?
ISO 4536 is an International Standard that specifies the test solution, the apparatus, and the procedure for a saline droplets corrosion test for assessment of the quality of metallic and non-organic coatings, made in accordance with the requirements of coating or product specifications on metallic substrates.
The method of test specified is suitable for detecting defects and discontinuities in metal coatings cathodic to the underlying metal. It is also suitable for chemical or electrochemical conversion coatings such as those obtained by chromate and phosphate treatments. The method is not suitable for testing coatings intended for the more severe types of service.
The type and number of test specimens, the exposure periods to be used for a particular product, and the interpretation of results are not specified in ISO 4536. Such details should be given in the appropriate materials or coating specifications.
Who is ISO 4536 - Saline droplets corrosion test for coatings for?
ISO 4536 on saline droplets corrosion test for coatings is useful for:
- Metallic and non-organic coating manufacturers
- Companies providing coating solutions
- Quality control and testing bodies
Why should you use ISO 4536 - Saline droplets corrosion test for coatings?
The saline droplets test is a significant quality control measure to evaluate the performance and quality of metallic and non-organic coatings to be applied to metallic substrates.
ISO 4536 provides best industry guidance on conducting the saline droplets corrosion test for coatings, that demonstrates the behaviour of coatings when exposed to corrosive saline environments. This can be used as an accelerated means of testing the ability of surface coatings to withstand atmospheric corrosion.
As a result, compliance with the best industry quality assessment methods as recommended by ISO 4536 can determine whether your coatings are fit for the intended end-product application. This testing can play a positive role in determining whether the coatings can provide the necessary protection to the substrates, such that their performance and durability remains uncompromised.
