What is ISO 4625‑1 about?
ISO 4625 discusses paints and varnishes. The ISO 4625 series specifies three widely used procedures for the measurement of the softening point of rosin-based resins. ISO 4625‑1 focuses on binders for paints and varnishes. ISO 4625‑1 presents the ring-and-ball method, which has been the accepted standard for many years.
ISO 4625‑1 specifies the test method for determining the softening point of resins (including rosin) and similar materials by means of ring-and-ball apparatus. Both, the manual and automated methods are specified. The automated method is the reference method.
Who is ISO 4625‑1 for?
ISO 4625‑1 on paint and varnish binders is useful for:
- Paint manufacturers
- Painters
- Adhesive/binder manufacturers
- Research and development personnel
Why should you use ISO 4625‑1?
A binder or resin improves the physical properties of paint like adhesion, durability, flexibility, and gloss. It is important that these binders are mixed well with the paint and within appropriate quantity, or the finishing might be affected.
ISO 4625‑1 helps you to determine the softening point of rosin-based resins by using the ring and ball method. ISO 4625‑1 gives you all the necessary information to carry out the test method successfully. ISO 4625‑1 helps you to identify the suitable temperature to mix the binder with paint.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 4625‑1:2020 cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 4625-1:2004), which has been technically revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
the automated method has been classified to be the reference method:
- An introduction with information on all three methods described in the three-part of the ISO 4625 series has been added
- CAS numbers have been added to the chemicals used
- The text has been editorially revised
- The normative references have been updated
