What is ISO 4945 - Determination of nitrogen in steel about?
ISO 4945 covers the determination of nitrogen in steel, enabling the prevention of nitrogen that can cause inconsistency of mechanical properties.
ISO 4945 specifies a spectrophotometric method for the determination of nitrogen in steel.
ISO 4945 method is applicable to the determination of nitrogen mass fraction between 0.0006 % and 0.050 % in low alloy steels and between 0.010 % and 0.050 % in high alloy steels.
Note: The method does not apply to samples containing silicon nitrides or having silicon contents higher than 0.6 %.
Who is ISO 4945 - Determination of nitrogen in steel for?
ISO 4945 on the determination of nitrogen in steel is relevant to:
- Steel industries
- Chemical engineers
- Testing authorities
- Chemical, biochemical, and pharmaceutical engineers
- Testing authorities
Why should you use ISO 4945 - Determination of nitrogen in steel?
Spectrophotometry is a measurement of how much a chemical substance absorbs or transmits. Inconsistent mechanical qualities in steel, embrittlement of the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of welded steels, and poor cold formability can all be caused by high nitrogen content.
ISO 4945 provides users guidance on the spectrophotometric method for the determination of nitrogen content in the steel. ISO 4945 also provides users with a step-by-step procedure for the method, enabling users to do the method correctly.
ISO 4945 provides users guidance on principle, reagents, apparatus, sampling, procedure, expression of results, and test report, enabling the prevention of ageing in steel.
The guidance in ISO 4945 enables users to assess the nitrogen content in steel and limit its presence to prevent inconsistency of mechanical properties, ageing and reduced ductility in steel.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 4945:2018 supersedes BS EN ISO 4945:2009, which is withdrawn.
BS EN ISO 4945:2018 replaces the first edition (ISO 4945:1977), which has been technically revised. The following changes have been made:
- The scope and applicable range have been expanded because of the interlaboratory test
- Addition of copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate for the treatment of the insoluble residue.
