What is ISO 5178-Destructive tests on welds in metallic materials?
ISO 5178 specifies the sizes of test specimens and the test procedure for conducting longitudinal tensile tests on cylindrical test specimens the mechanical properties of weld metal in a fusion welded joint.
ISO 5178 is applicable to metallic materials in all forms of product with joints made by any fusion welding process, having joint sizes that are sufficient to obtain cylindrical test specimens with dimensions in accordance with ISO 68921.
Unless specified otherwise for specific points in ISO 5178, the general principles of ISO 6892‑1 apply.
Who is ISO 5178-Destructive tests on welds in metallic materials for?
ISO 5178 on destructive tests on welds in metallic materials is relevant to:
- Manufacturers of weld metal
- Manufacturers of fusion welded joints
- Sheet metal manufacturers
- Aerospace and shipbuilding industry
- Construction, automotive, mechanical industry
- Welders
Why should you use ISO 5178-Destructive tests on welds in metallic materials?
Destructive weld testing involves the physical destruction of the completed weld in order to evaluate its characteristics. This method of testing is used frequently for a number of applications.
Guidance in ISO 5178 helps determine the right size test specimen for carrying longitudinal tensile tests in fusion welded joints. This improves the reliability of destructive tests on welds in metallic materials.
Adopting the tests recommended by ISO 5178 helps determine the mechanical properties of fusion-welded joints which improves the quality of welds and welding processes.
What’s changed since the last update?
