What is BS EN ISO 6507-1 - Vickers hardness test about?
The first in a four-part series of international standards on the Vickers hardness test, BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 outlines procedures and guidelines for performing Vickers tests on a wide range of materials, including metals, ceramics and composites.
Who is BS EN ISO 6507-1 - Vickers hardness test for?
-
laboratories
-
manufacturing industries
-
research and development
-
quality control departments
-
academic institutions
-
certification bodies
-
regulatory agencies.
What does BS EN ISO 6507-1 - Vickers hardness test cover?
BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 specifies the Vickers hardness test method for three different ranges of test force for metallic materials, including hard metals and other cemented carbides, metallic coatings, and other inorganic coatings:
-
for test force range F is greater than or equal to 49,03, the hardness symbol is greater than or equal to HV 5 and the designation is Vickers hardness test
-
for test force range 1.961 less than or equal to F less than 49.03, the hardness symbol is HV 0.2 to less than HV 5 and the designation is Low-force Vickers hardness test
-
for test force range 0.098 07 less than or equal to F less than 1.961, the hardness symbol is HV 0.01 to less than HV 0.2 and the designation is Vickers microhardness test.
A periodic verification method is specified for routine checking of the testing machine in service by the user.
NOTE: BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 is not applicable for coatings with thickness less than 0,030 mm when testing normal to the coating surface. This standard is not applicable for coatings with thickness less than 0,100 mm when testing a cross-section of the coating. ISO 14577-1 can be used for the determination of hardness from smaller indentations.
What’s new about BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023?
BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 replaces the 2018 version of this standard. The principal changes are:
- the scope is revised to include testing on metallic coatings and other inorganic coatings
- requirements are added to the test report for reporting the surface curvature, if the curvature correction is applicable
- Annex H is added to cover coatings specific requirements
- references are updated.
Why should you use BS EN ISO 6507-1 - Vickers hardness test?
-
You can use the Vickers technique given in BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 on a variety of materials, including metals, ceramics, and composites and now metallic coatings and other inorganic coatings. It can also be used for a wide range of applications, including product quality assurance and quality control; material testing and selection; and research and development.
-
Accuracy and reliability. BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 delivers accurate and reliable hardness measurements that are vital for quality control and research purposes. Accurately assessing material hardness allows manufacturers and researchers to study material behaviour and advance material science as well as understand material properties, product performance, and suitability for specific applications.
-
Adherence to BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 guarantees consistent and standardized hardness testing procedures, promoting easy data comparisons from different sources.
-
BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 focuses on microhardness testing allowing the evaluation of small or localized regions within materials, making it especially suitable for examining small-scale or precious samples without compromising their integrity.
-
Product performance. BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 enables customers to maintain consistent and reliable product performance, establishing their business as an industry leader and enhancing customer confidence.
-
Hardness testing of the type provided by BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 is crucial for establishing compliance with industry standards.
-
Risk management. BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023 reduces the risk of errors or inconsistencies in hardness measurements, ultimately contributing to greater product safety and strengthened risk management.
-
Efficiency and sustainability. Standardized testing, as provided by BS EN ISO 6507-1:2023, results in time and resource savings, leading to improved efficiency and productivity. Also, because the test is essentially non-destructive it reduces waste and is more sustainable.
