What is ISO 662-Moisture and volatile matter in animal and vegetable fats and oils about?
ISO 662 is an international standard that discusses the determination of moisture and volatile matter in animal and vegetable fats and oils to ensure reducing the effect of moisture and volatile matter on the quality of fats and oils.
ISO 662 specifies two methods for the determination, by drying, of the moisture and volatile matter content of animal or vegetable fats and oils:
- Method A, using a sand bath or hotplate
- Method B, using a drying oven
Method A applies to all fats and oils.
Method B applies only to non-drying fats and oils with an acid value less than 4.
Note: Milk and milk products (or fat obtained from milk and milk products) are excluded from the scope of ISO 662.
Who is ISO 662-Moisture and volatile matter in animal and vegetable fats and oils for?
ISO 662 on the moisture and volatile matter in animal and vegetable fats and oils is useful for:
- Food scientists
- Food technologists
- Food laboratories
- Food health and safety departments
Why should you use ISO 662-Moisture and volatile matter in animal and vegetable fats and oils?
Moisture content has an upward and downward effect on acid value. It was observed that moisture contents at higher levels affected the color of the oil, which changed from brown to dark brown. The volatile matter is the gaseous phase formed from the thermal degradation of the material which affects the mass of the fats and oil.
ISO 662 provides you with sampling, apparatus, preparation of test samples, test methods, test procedures, precision, and much more.
The test methods and test procedures provided by ISO 662 assist in detecting moisture and volatile matter in animal and vegetable fats and oils and improving their quality and ensuring animal and vegetable fats and oils are safe for consumption.
With obedience and compliance to ISO 662, you can enhance the efficacy of the animal and vegetable fats and oils and manufacture a standardized product.
What is changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 662:2016 supersedes ISO 662:1998, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 662:2016 has made some technical changes, a non-applicability statement for milk and milk products has been added to the scope compared to the previous edition ISO 662:1998.
