What is this standard about?
This international standard has been adopted to replace equivalent European standards (BS EN 10083-1 and -2). It specifies technical delivery requirements for non-alloy steels for quenching and tempering.
Who is this standard for?
- Wire and wire rod manufacturers and stockists
- Spring manufacturers and stockists
- Design engineers
- Importers
- Purchasing staff
- Quality manager and engineers
Why should you use this standard?
It specifies technical delivery requirements for:
- Semi-finished products, hot formed, e.g. blooms, billets, slabs (see Note 1)
- Bars (see Note 1)
- Wire rod
- Finished flat products
- Hammer or drop forgings (see Note 1)
Manufactured from direct hardening non-alloy steels and non-alloy flame- and induction-hardening steels and supplied a heat-treatment condition.
The steels are generally intended for the manufacture of quenched and tempered or austempered and flame- or induction-hardened machine parts but can also be partly used in the normalized condition.
NOTE 1: Hammer-forged semi-finished products (blooms, billets, slabs, etc.), seamless rolled rings and hammer-forged bars are, in the following, covered under semi-finished products or bars and not under the term “hammer and drop forgings”.
NOTE 2: This part of ISO 683 does not apply to bright products and bars and wire rod for cold heading. For such products, see BS ISO 683-18 and BS ISO 4954.
In special cases, variations in these technical delivery requirements or additions to them can form the subject of an agreement between the manufacturer and purchaser at the time of enquiry and order.
In addition to this part of ISO 683, the general technical delivery requirements of BS ISO 404 apply.
What’s changed since the last update?
This international standard replaces two equivalent European standards (EN 10083-1 and -2). It was adopted to gain the advantages of a harmonized EN/ISO standard and to improve the quality of revisions through access to a wider pool of experts.
