What is ISO 683-3 - Case-hardening steels about?
All steel has to be treated in order to be used in products.
ISO 683-3 is the third part of ISO 683 series on heat-treatable steels. ISO 683-3 specifies the technical delivery requirements for semi-finished products; hot formed like blooms, billets, slabs; bars; wire rod; finished flat products; hammer or drop forgings manufactured from the case-hardening non-alloy or alloy steels and supplied in a heat-treatment condition suitable for a product as per its surface condition. The steels are, in general, intended for the manufacture of case-hardened machine parts. Note 1: Hammer-forged semi-finished products (blooms, billets, slabs, etc.), seamless rolled rings and hammer forged bars are covered under semi-finished products or bars and not under the term “hammer and drop forgings”.
Note 2: For International Standards relating to steels conforming with the requirements for the chemical composition are in Table 3 of this document, however, supplied in other product forms or treatment conditions than given above or intended for special applications, and for other related International Standards, can refer to the bibliography.
Who is ISO 683-3 - Case-hardening steels for?
ISO 683-3 on case-hardening steels is useful for:
- The metals industry
- The machinery and metal products industry
- The construction industry
- Manufacturers and suppliers of steel
- Manufacturers of steel products
- Product development / innovation teams
- Quality control / testing personnel
- Procurement teams
- Agencies involved in the inspection of heat-treatable steels
Why should you use ISO 683-3 - Case-hardening steels?
ISO 683-3 provides for the technical specifications on heat-treatable components intended for the manufacture of case-hardened machine parts. ISO 683-3 provides you with details such as classification and designation for steels. In addition, ISO 683-3 guides you with information to be supplied by the purchaser along with an ordering example.
The manufacturing process section discusses different variations of heat treatment condition and surface condition at delivery. Requirements such as chemical composition, hardness, hardenability, machinability, cold shearability, grain size, and internal soundness are discussed in ISO 683-3.
Inspection, test methods, and marking details have also been provided in ISO 683-3. The testing method in ISO 683-3 can serve as a guide to testing agencies, industries and manufacturers of products. ISO 683-3 serves as a procurement guide that enables clear communication between buyers and suppliers so that users have access to high quality steel products.
