What is ISO 717-1 about?
ISO 717 discusses acoustics sound insulation in buildings and of building elements.
ISO 717-1 is the first part in the multi-series of international standard on airborne sound insulation in buildings and building elements.
ISO 717-1 specifies:
- Single number quantities for airborne sound insulation in buildings and of building elements
- The different sound level spectra of various noise sources like noise sources inside a building and traffic outside a building
- Rules for determining these quantities from the results of measurements carried out in one-third-octave or octave bands
ISO 717-1 applies to single-number quantities that are used for rating airborne sound insulation and for simplifying the formulation of acoustical requirements in building codes.
Note: Under ISO 717-1 single-number quantities are calculated using one-third-octave bands only if they are used for laboratory measurements in accordance with ISO 101402.
Who is ISO 717-1 for?
ISO 717-1 on airborne sound insulation is useful for:
- Construction companies
- Builders
- Civil engineers
- Acousticians
- Architects
Why should you use ISO 717-1?
While designing a building it is necessary to deal with issues regarding airborne sound to have better sound-insulated buildings.
ISO 717-1 provides a standardized method whereby the frequency-dependent values of airborne sound insulation can be converted into a single number for characterizing the acoustical performance.
ISO 717-1 reduces airborne sounds while designing buildings to maintain the performance of the building.
ISO 717-1 reduces noise and acoustic disturbances which can cause long-term repercussions in terms of the health of the users in the building.
ISO 717-1 provides assistance to measure airborne sound insulation for determining quantities that are carried in one-third-octave or octave bands.
Adopt ISO 717-1 to ensure optimal airborne sound insulation in buildings and building elements that can limit the extent of vibration and improve noise control performance.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 717-1:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 717-1:2013 which is withdrawn. The main changes are:
- Update in references
- ISO 101401:2016, G.6 relocated into this document
