What is ISO 7438 about?
ISO 7438 is a standard that serves technical specifications for bend testing that is applicable to metallic materials.
ISO 7438 specifies a method for determining the ability of metallic materials to undergo plastic deformation in bending.
ISO 7438 applies to test pieces taken from metallic products, as specified in the relevant product standard.
ISO 7438 provides information on principle, test equipment such as V-block and clamp, test pieces including forgings, castings and semi-finished products, procedure and interpretation of results for bend testing of metallic materials.
Note: ISO 7438 does not apply to certain materials or products, for example, tubes in full section or welded joints, for which other standards exist.
Who is ISO 7438 for?
ISO 7438 on bend test for metallic materials is applicable to:
- Manufacturers of metallic components
- Dealers and importers of metallic components
- Raw material suppliers of metals
- Metal testing laboratories
Why should you use BS EN ISO 7438?
Bend testing on metals is used to evaluate the ductility and soundness of a metal. It is used to determine the bending strength and quality assessment purposes.
ISO 7438 specifies a bend test method that identifies a metals maximum yield strength and resistance to bending. This enables you to incorporate suitable metals for specific products based on the metals yield strength, thereby improving your products build quality.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 7438:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 7438:2016, which is now withdrawn.
Changes in BS EN ISO 7438:2020 include the addition of new Annex B, describing bending test at plane strain condition.
