What is ISO 7539-4 – Corrosion of metal and alloys about?
ISO 7539-4 is an international standard and a part of the ISO 7539 series that discusses the Preparation and use of uniaxially loaded tension specimens for corrosion of metals and alloys. Corrosion is a type of oxidisation whereas rusting is a part of corrosion. If an alloy contains ferrous metal (iron), it will rust.
ISO 7539-4 covers procedures for designing, preparing and using uniaxially loaded tension test specimens for investigating the susceptibility of metal to stress corrosion. The term “metal” as used in this part of ISO 7539 includes alloys.
Tension test specimens are adaptable for testing a wide variety of product forms, including plate, rod, wire, sheet and tubes, as well as parts joined by welding, riveting, or other methods. Notched specimens are also used.
Uniaxially loaded tensile specimens may be stressed quantitatively with equipment for the application of either a constant load, a constant strain or an increased load or strain.
Who is ISO 7539-4 – Corrosion of metal and alloys for?
ISO 7539-4 on uniaxially loaded tension specimens applies to:
- Manufacturer of metals
- Maintenance and quality testing personnel
Why should you use ISO 7539-4 – Corrosion of metals and alloys?
Corrosion is a type of oxidisation whereas rusting is a part of corrosion. If an alloy contains ferrous metal (iron), it will rust. The uniaxial tension test is one of the most commonly used tests to determine important material parameters such as Young's modulus, yield strength, ultimate strength, elongation at break, Poisson's ratio, and Lankford coefficients (R-values).
ISO 7539-4 provides you with the principle of corrosion in which the test consists in subjecting a specimen to a constant load, constant strain or increasing load or strain to determine stress corrosion susceptibility by reference to one or more of the parameters enumerated.
ISO 7539-4 provides you with the specimens that help you in the cross-section which may be circular, square, rectangular, annular or, in special cases, of other forms. ISO 7539-4 provides you with comprehensive guidance useful throughout the process of production.
