What is ISO 7854 – Flexing resistance of fabrics about?
ISO 7854 is an international standard that focuses on the best practices for maintaining the good quality of rubber or plastic-coated fabrics.
ISO 7854 describes three methods of assessing the resistance of coated fabrics to damage by repeated flexing:
- Method A — De Mattia method
- Method B — Schildknecht method
- Method C — Crumple/flex method
Who is ISO 7854 – Flexing resistance of fabrics for?
ISO 7854 on the determination of resistance to damage by flexing rubber or plastic-coated fabrics useful for:
- Rubber and plastic-coated fabrics manufacturer
- Rubber and plastic-coated fabrics testing institution
- Research and development facilities
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use ISO 7854 – Flexing resistance of fabrics?
Investigation of dynamic-flex fatigue properties of coated fabrics has for several years suffered from poor repeatability (due in part to the unknown but inevitable variability of the material tested) and worse reproducibility. Nevertheless, the dynamic-flex performance of coated fabrics has been long and widely used as a measure of product quality.
ISO 7854 attempts to standardize the mounting difficulties associated with the Schildknecht apparatus (method B) and introduces a bi-directional flex fatigue test that provides a large test piece, enabling post-flexing investigations, such as hydrostatic-head tests, to be conducted.
ISO 7854 provides you with a useful indication of the durability of coated fabrics. However, for most applications, flexing conditions induced by these test methods are dissimilar to the conditions met in practice.
Thus, ISO 7854 helps its users to ensure the quality of the rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics by giving them the idea about flexing resistance so that they can avoid damage to the fabric.
