What is BS EN ISO 8130-1 on coating powders about?
BS EN ISO 8130-1 is the first part of the BS EN 8130 multi-series on coating powders. BS EN 8130-1 specifies a method to find out the particle size distribution of coating powders, by sieve analysis. Particle size distributions with fewer than 100 μm are determined by laser diffraction. This method can be used as a quality control procedure (go/no go test) by checking the amount retained on a single sieve.
The following particle sizes are typical for coating powders, however, the particle size can deviate depending on the application:
- Thin-film technology: 1 μm to 63 μm
- Electrostatic coating: 10 μm to 200 μm
- Fluidizing-bed method: 100 μm and above
NOTE Sieves with a mesh size smaller than 32 μm are not practical and are likely to become blind during use.
Who is BS EN ISO 8130-1 for?
BS EN ISO 8130-1 on coating powders is useful for:
- Paint and varnish manufacturers
- Research and development personnel
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS EN ISO 8130-1?
As a paint manufacturer, you care about improving the efficiency of your products and ensuring their reliability in the consumer market. For high quality product performance, your coating powders need to be evenly distributed, and free from contamination. BS EN ISO 8130-1 arms you with tests to find out the particle distribution in these coating powders. BS EN ISO 8130-1 also gives you guidelines to prepare the test sieve for manual sieving. In addition, BS EN ISO 8130-1 helps you with methods of machine sieving using:
- Air-jet sieve apparatus
- Vibration mechanism
BS EN ISO 8130-1 also acts as a quality check by removing contaminants from coating powders.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 8130-1:2019 supersedes BS EN ISO 8130-1:2010, which has been withdrawn.
BS EN ISO 8130-1:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 8130-1:2019:
- A Terms and definitions clause and Principle clause has been added
- The choice of sieving method and sieve selectivity has been added
- Manual sieving and sieving using a vibration mechanism has been added
