What is ISO/ASTM 52907 - Methods to characterize metal powders about?
ISO/ASTM 52907 provides technical specifications for metallic powders intended to be used in additive manufacturing and covers the following aspects:
- Documentation and traceability
- Sampling
- Particle size distribution
- Chemical composition
- Characteristic densities
- Morphology
- Flowability
- Contamination
- Packaging and storage
ISO/ASTM 52907 gives specific requirements for used metallic powders in additive manufacturing. ISO/ASTM 52907 states the general principles for producing artifacts, measuring artifacts and artifact geometry.
Note: ISO/ASTM 52907 does not deal with safety aspects.
Who is ISO/ASTM 52907 - Methods to characterize metal powders for?
ISO/ASTM 52907 on methods to characterize metal powders is useful for:
- Manufacturers of metal powders
- The automotive industry
- The aerospace industry
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use ISO/ASTM 52907 - Methods to characterize metal powders?
ISO/ASTM 52907 aims to simplify the relationship between the supplier and the customer for the supply of metallic powder for additive manufacturing purposes whatever the process involved. ISO/ASTM 52907 does not aim to develop new standards but provides a list of existing standards dedicated to metallic powder that are suitable for additive manufacturing.
ISO/ASTM 52907 states the methods to characterize metal powders are essential for consistently producing metal components. For metal powders, these can include chemistry, morphology, and microstructural characteristics that must be measured using the appropriate analytical technique. The powder characterization allows for the optimization of processing parameters and the avoidance of problems such as raking. The findings can also be used to determine how a powder changes over time, such as through reuse and recycling.
