What is BS IEC 60404-8-7 about?
BS IEC 60404-8-7 defines the grades of electrical steel strips and sheets with specified mechanical properties and magnetic polarization. In particular, BS IEC 60404-8-7 gives general requirements, mechanical properties, magnetic polarization, geometric characteristics, tolerances, and technological characteristics, as well as inspection procedures.
BS IEC 60404-8-7 applies to electrical steel strips and sheets intended for the construction of poles and rims of rotating electrical machines.
Who is BS IEC 60404-8-7 for?
BS IEC 60404-8-7 on magnetic materials is relevant to:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of electrical steel strips and sheets
- Manufacturers of rotating electrical machines
- Mechanical engineers
- Fabricators
- Welders
Why should you use BS IEC 60404-8-7?
Steel displays ferromagnetic properties as it is derived from iron.
BS IEC 60404-8-7 groups the grades of cold-rolled grain-oriented electrical steel strip and sheet in three classes:
- Conventional grades
- High permeability grades
- Magnetic domain refined high permeability grades
As a manufacturer, compliance with BS IEC 60404-8-7 can ensure that properties such as low core losses, high flux density and permeabilities, meet the specific need of applications.
Best industry guidance on magnetic properties of steel as per BS IEC 60404-8-7 can be beneficial in making the right selection of materials used for the optimal performance of parts and overall applications in corrosive environments.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS IEC 60404-8-7:2020 replaces the fourth edition published in 2017. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- Insertion of the third class of grain-oriented electrical steels for magnetic domain refined high permeability grades
- Introduction of the single sheet tester (SST) method as a reference measurement method for this third class of material together with a conversion factor for transposition of the SST measurement results to equivalent Epstein values
- Update of the electrical steel range to take account of the current offers and demands of grades
