What is BS IEC 61196-1-116 - Coaxial communication cables about?
BS IEC 61196 is a series on coaxial communication cables. Coaxial communication cable consists of an inner conductor surrounded by a concentric conducting shield, with the two separated by a dielectric (insulating material); many coaxial cables also have a protective outer sheath or jacket. BS IEC 61196-1-116 applies to coaxial communications cables. It specifies test methods for determining the impedance of coaxial communications cables with time domain reflectometry (TDR).
Who is BS IEC 61196-1-116 - Coaxial communication cables for?
BS IEC 61196-1-116 on coaxial communication cables is useful for:
- Telecommunication component manufacturers
- Telecommunication equipment manufacturers
- Design engineers
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS IEC 61196-1-116 - Coaxial communication cables?
Coaxial cable is a type of transmission line, used to carry high-frequency electrical signals with low losses. BS IEC 61196-1-116 follows a principle that when a step function signal is sent to the cable under test and the signal pass through the test point of cable, part of the energy is reflected. The distance (L) from the input end to the test point can be calculated by measuring the total signal travelling time (t) as BS IEC 61196-1-116. The change of impedance can be also calculated by measuring the amplitude of the input and reflected signal, as shown in BS IEC 61196-1-116.
The test report of BS IEC 61196-1-116 includes the test sample length Lsample, in metres (m), ambient temperature, in degree Celsius (°C), parameters set in the VNA (when applicable), the tolerance of the precision load and airline and the impedance of the test sample, in ohms (Ω). Using BS IEC 61196-1-116 you can specify test methods for determining the impedance of coaxial communications cables with time-domain reflectometry (TDR).
