What is BS IEC 61196‑1‑119 about?
BS IEC 61196 is a series on coaxial communication cables. Coaxial cable is a type of electrical cable that carries high-frequency electrical signals. Coaxial cables are used in telephone lines, broadband internet cables, and cable television signals. They are preferred for their low losses in signal.
BS IEC 61196‑1‑119 defines the requirements to determine the average power handling capability of a coaxial cable at specified frequencies at ambient temperatures.
Who is BS IEC 61196‑1‑119 for?
BS IEC 61196‑1‑119 on coaxial communication cables is useful for:
- Manufacturers of telecommunication equipment
- Design engineers
- Research and development facilities
Why should you use BS IEC 61196‑1‑119?
Coaxial communication cables consist of an inner conductor surrounded by a concentric conducting  shield, with the two separated a dielectric (insulating material) Many coaxial cables also have a protective outer sheath or jacket. BS IEC 61196‑1‑119 discusses electrical tests for determining the RF power rating of the cable.
BS IEC 61196‑1‑119 provides two test methods for determining the RF power rating of these cables. The tests cover aspects such as sample preparation, temperature, surrounding conditions, and equipment testing.
Using BS IEC 61196‑1‑119 you can determine the average power handling capability of a coaxial cable.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS IEC 61196‑1‑119:2020 supersedes BS IEC 61196‑1‑119:2012. BS IEC 61196‑1‑119:2020 includes some technical and editorial changes with respect to BS IEC 61196‑1‑119:2012. These include:
- Title was changed from RF power rating to RF average power rating
- A test method to determine sufficient duration is included as Annex A
- The equations used for calculating cable coefficients and RF average power rating are corrected
- The clauses and subclauses are rearranged
