What is BS IEC 61747‑40‑1 - mobile cover glass mechanical test about?
The top layer of a phone screen consists of a hard glass. The durability of this glass affects the longevity and usability of the mobile phone. BS IEC 61747‑40‑1 is part of the BS IEC 61747 series on liquid crystal display (LCD) devices.
BS IEC 61747‑40‑1 provides mechanical performance testing guidelines for cover glass used in electronic flat panel displays in mobile devices. BS IEC 61747‑40‑1 focuses on key mechanical testing performance parameters and covers mainly strength and damage resistance attributes. The test methods focus on the cover glass level testing only.
Who is BS IEC 61747‑40‑1 - mobile cover glass mechanical test for?
BS IEC 61747‑40‑1 on mobile cover glass mechanical test is useful for:
- Manufacturers of mobile phone devices
- Designers of mobile phones / design teams
- Manufacturers and suppliers of glass components for mobile phones
- Quality control teams
- Product development teams / innovation teams
Why should you use BS IEC 61747‑40‑1 - mobile cover glass mechanical test?
Mobile electronic devices have become increasingly sophisticated and often incorporate displays for the purposes of user interface and viewing. Such displays commonly incorporate a transparent cover glass which aids in protecting the display against the introduction of damage through routine device transport and use, as well as occasional or accidental misuse.
The purpose of BS IEC 61747‑40‑1 is to provide mechanical testing guidelines for cover glasses used in such applications. Such glasses can be strengthened or not, for example via an ion exchange process, which acts to increase mechanical strength through the introduction of a surface compressive layer.
The mobile cover glass mechanical test methods described in BS IEC 61747‑40‑1 include edge strength, surface impact resistance, and resistance against sharp contact surface damage. Retained surface strength has also been addressed in BS IEC 61747‑40‑1. Using BS IEC 61747‑40‑1 guidelines, you are in a position to assess the durability of the cover glass. These tests could give you insights to evolve stronger cover glasses that let your customers remain worry-free when handling their mobile phones.
