What is the BS IEC 62106‑9 — RDS variant used in North America about?
BS IEC 62106‑9 is a part of an international multi-series standard that focuses on the radio data system.
BS IEC 62106‑9 specifies the Radio Broadcast Data System (RBDS), which is an RDS compatible variant used in countries of North America. RBDS was first standardized by the U.S. National Radio Systems Committee (NRSC) in 1993 and subsequently revised in 1998, 2004, 2005 and 2011.
BS IEC 62106‑9 indicates the frequency range of operation that varies from 64.0MHz to 108.0MHz, according to the regional regulatory authority.
Note: With the publication IEC 62106‑9, the RDS and RBDS standards are now harmonized into a single document.
Who is IEC 62106‑9 — RDS variant used in North America for?
BS IEC 62106‑9 on RDS variant used in North America is useful for:
- Manufacturer companies of hi-fi tuners
- Manufacturing companies of most car radios
- Manufacturing companies of VHF FM radio
Why should you use IEC 62106‑9— RDS variant used in North America?
FM radio with RDS is an analogue-digital hybrid system, which is still a valid data transmission technology and only the applications need adaptation. But Its only disadvantage is the lack of sufficient data capacity which is needed to be solved.
BS IEC 62106‑9 provides you with a solution for the issue of limited data capacity, investigated by the RDS Forum. It gives you RDS2, which has both sidebands around the RDS 57 kHz subcarrier and can be repeated a few times, focused on additional subcarriers higher up in the FM multiplex, while still remaining compatible with the ITU Recommendations.
BS IEC 62106‑9 specifies the core elements of RDS2, loaded with the additional subcarriers, which enables a significant increase of RDS data capacity for you. Later, you only need to create only new additional data applications, using the RDS-ODA feature, which has been part of the RDS standard IEC 62106 for many years.
