What is BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 about?
BS IEC 62977 discusses electronic displays. BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 gives fundamental measurements of optical characteristics for these electronic displays. BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 specifies standard measurement conditions and measuring methods for determining the optical characteristics of electronic display modules and systems. These methods apply to emissive and transmissive direct-view displays that render real 2D images on a flat panel.
BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 evaluates the optical characteristics of these displays under darkroom conditions. BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 applies to the testing of display performance in response to standard analogue or digital input signals that are not absolute luminance encoded.
Note1: These methods are limited to input signals with typical OETFs such as defined in IEC 61966-2-1, ITU BT. Rec. 601, ITU BT. Rec.709, and ITU BT. Rec.2020. The tests in BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 are not approved for use with HDR input signals.
Who is BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 for?
BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 on electronic display devices is useful for:
- Manufacturers of electronic devices such as televisions and monitors
- Suppliers/retailers of electronic display devices
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use BS IEC 62977‑2‑1?
A flat panel or flat panel display is a display with a flat surface and minimal depth that emits visible light from the surface. The display is subdivided into an array of electronically driven pixels which can be light valves modulating a backlight, or self-luminous. Emissive/transmissive/reflective hybrid displays can be flat panel or flat panel displays.
Electronic displays are one of the most competitive markets in electronic devices with rapid developments in technology. Display devices with lower image resolution or image clarity are considered to be inferior products. To determine these performance specifications for electronic display devices multiple tests need to be performed.
BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 describes three average picture levels on display patterns, and apply various optical measurement methods to them. Some of these measurements like common box optical measurement methods are meant to be used during the research and development and quality control period of products. Implementing these methods given in BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 helps you to create a good quality electronic display with clear picture perception, better resolution and sharp image quality.
The measurement methods in BS IEC 62977‑2‑1 not only help you to identify the specifications of electronic display devices, but also helps you to improve them.
