What is ISO 10049 - Porosity assessment in aluminium alloy castings about?
Porosity is assessed on the machined surface of the casting, or one part of it, after total or partial machining as agreed between the parties concerned. The machined surface for inspection is thus a selected operating surface or a surface that has been machined only for reasons of inspection at a specific point on the casting, contiguous sample or hot top.
ISO 10049 specifies a visual method for assessing the porosity of the machined surface of aluminium alloy castings. Inspection is done with the naked eye or with a magnifying glass of magnification, not more than ×10, only for measuring the diameter of the pores.
Note: ISO 10049 does not apply to assessing porosity shown on radiograms.
Who is ISO 10049 - Porosity assessment in aluminium alloy castings for?
ISO 10049 on porosity assessment in aluminium alloy castings is applicable to:
- The metal casting industry
- Porosity testing authorities
- Metallurgical engineers
- Welding professionals
- Manufacturers and suppliers of aluminium alloy castings
- Inspection bodies/Quality control professionals
Why should you use ISO 10049 - Porosity assessment in aluminium alloy castings?
The porosity of the castings is among the most common causes affecting the mechanical properties of castings. The characteristics affected include porosity reduction of the strength and ductility of the casting, fatigue fractures in the place of porosity reduced tightness or penetration of pressure medium through the wall of casting and also reduced quality of machined finish surface of castings.
ISO 10049 provides guidance on the inspection requirements and acceptance criteria while assessing porosity. The porosity of the surface is usually assessed under good lighting conditions. The most suitable lighting is at an angle of 10° to 15° according to the quality of machining and in a direction opposite to that of the inspection.
ISO 10049 guidelines help you for evaluation of porosity of the machined surface of aluminium alloy castings, and to ensure the quality of the metallurgical treatment of the material and its macro homogeneity.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 10049:2019 supersedes ISO 10049:1992, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 10049:2019 has some changes compared with the ISO 10049:1992. These include:
- The note in the scope has been modified
- Clause 3 for terms and definitions has been added
- Table 1 has been converted into Figures 1 to 6 and the figures have been redrawn
- The subclauses in Clause 5 have been reordered
