What is BS ISO 10631 about?
ISO 10631 focuses on industrial valves. Industrial valves are mechanical devices that open, close, or partially obstruct passageways to regulate the flow of liquid or gas within a system. BS ISO 10631 specifies the general requirements for design, materials (e.g., steel, cast iron, ductile iron, copper alloy), pressure/temperature ratings and testing for butterfly valves having metallic bodies for use in flanged or butt-welding piping systems.
Additional requirements given in the relevant application standards can apply to butterfly valves used for more specific applications (e.g., for the water industry, the chemical and petrochemical process industry, the oil and gas industry).ISO 10631 applies to metallic butterfly valves used for all industrial applications.
ISO 10631 covers end connections specifications for the following type of valve:
- Wafer-type valves
- Flangeless valves
- Butt-welded ends
Who is ISO 10631 for?
ISO 10631 on industrial valves is useful for organizations that design, build and maintain metallic butterfly valves for the following industries:
- Valve manufacturers
- Design engineer
- Quality control personnel
- Research and development facilities
- Manufacturing sectors
In addition to manufacturers and suppliers of bolted bonnet steel gate valves, the following entities will also use ISO 10631:
- Mechanical engineers
- Inspection bodies
- Design engineers
- Research and development team
- Quality control personnel
Why should you use ISO 10631?
Industrial valves are devices that are used to regulate liquids, gases, and slurries. The flow of liquids or gases can be controlled using these valves. Fitting a valve correctly increases systems life expectancy and lowers the effects of cavitation. ISO 10631 provides you with requirements for design, materials pressure/temperature ratings and testing for metallic butterfly valves that you need to adhere to. Following the design guidelines given in ISO 10631 helps you to design effective metallic butterfly valves. ISO 10631 covers all the safety requirements, dimensions and tolerance specifications related to the strength and thickness calculation of metallic butterfly valves. ISO 10631 considers factors such as inspection and testing activities associated with the verification of industrial butterfly valves for compliance with the standard. ISO 10631 also guides you to use design reviews by manufacturers.
Following the specifications provided in ISO 10631 lets you manufacture and supply high-quality metallic butterfly valves to your customers. These customers will be able to safely use the metallic butterfly valves. Using ISO 10631 you can specify the general requirements for design, materials (e.g., steel, cast iron, ductile iron, copper alloy), pressure/temperature ratings and testing for butterfly valves.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 10631:2021 supersedes BS ISO 10631:2013. BS ISO 10631:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 10631:2013. These include:
- The extension of the pressure ratings to include PN 63, PN 100, and Class 25, 250 and 600
- Update of the normative references and the terms and definitions
- Addition in Clause 4 of a requirement to mark the valve with any reduced pressure and/or temperature limits
- Addition of 5.6 for disc requirements
- Addition in 5.7 of requirements to have a feature preventing shaft ejection from the valve in the shaft or shaft-to-disc connection fails
