What is ISO 11358-3 about ?
ISO 11358‑3 is part three of a series of documents that specifies an analysis method for determining the activation energy using the Ozawa- Friedman plot.
ISO 11358‑3 also includes the preparation of master plots for verification of the reaction kinetics determined by thermogravimetry.
Who is ISO 11358-3 for ?
ISO 11358‑3 on Thermogravimetry (TG) of polymers - Determination of the activation energy using the Ozawa- Friedman plot and analysis of the reaction kinetics is useful for:
- Thermal engineers
- Polymer industries
- Plastic industry
Why should you use ISO 11358-3 ?
Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is an analytical technique used to determine a material’s thermal stability and its fraction of volatile components by monitoring the weight change that occurs as a sample is heated at a constant rate.
For most polymers, viscous flow activation energy is the minimum energy required for the flow unit (chain segment) to overcome the barrier and transit from the in-situ position to the nearby “hole” in the flow process, and it is a sign of the sensitivity for the apparent shear viscosity to temperature.
The Ozawa-Friedman plot (logarithm of the rate of mass loss versus the reciprocal of absolute temperature at a given mass loss) is a derivative method that can be applied to data obtained by any mode of temperature change in thermal analysis; e.g. isothermal, constant heating rate, sample controlled thermal analysis, temperature jump, and repeated temperature scanning.
ISO 11358-3 helps you determine the activation energy of polymers with an analysis method called Ozawa- Friedman plot which checks the activation energy with changing temperatures. This will help you understand the sensitivity and viscosity of the polymer, which will give you more knowledge and hence help increase safety in your organization.
What’s changed since the last update ?
BS ISO 11358-3:2021 supersedes BS ISO 11358-3:2013, which is withdrawn.
BS ISO 11358-3:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 11358-3:2013. These are:
- The term "conversion" has been deleted.
- Corresponding reference to ISO 11358-2 has been added in Clause 3.
- Details of the gas atmosphere in 8.1 and 8.2 have been clarified.
