What is ISO 11687-3 about?
ISO 11687-3 is the third part of the multi-series of International Standards on plain bearings.
ISO 11687-3 is applicable to the plain bearings on pedestal plain bearings.
ISO 11687-3 specifies design characteristics for centre flange bearings for the size range 9 to 28, as well as design characteristics for shafts.
Note: It is applicable to centre flange bearings used mainly in electrical and turbo engineering industries.
Who is ISO 11687-3 for?
ISO 11687-3 on centre flange bearings is relevant to:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of centre flange bearings
- Electrical and turbo engineering industries
- Electrical engineers
- Civil engineers
- Fabricators
Why should you use ISO 11687-3?
Plain bearings are used for sliding, rotating, oscillating or reciprocating motion. Plain bearings support and guide moving components inside the engine. In this regard, centre flange bearings are usually applied in horizontal electrical machines such as generators and motors, by mounting them directly into the machine shield with one side extending into the machine.
ISO 11687-3 provides you with the classification of centre flange bearings according to their design that corresponds to various characteristics such as housing, heat-dissipation, shape of bore for journal bearing and type of lubrication and thrust bearing. Moreover, these characteristics are denoted with symbols, for consistency and clarity amongst users.
Indications on the appropriate dimensions, materials and tolerances are also provided under ISO 11687-3.
Adopting design characteristics with the ISO 11687-3-compliant guidance, will help you ensure of highly efficient and wear-free rotation of these components. Its ability to withstand axial loads or axial thrusts with the appropriate thrust surface will ultimately prevent corrosion and ensure durable performance of end-products.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 11687-3:2020 supersedes ISO 11687-3:1995, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 11687-3:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 11687-3:1995. These include:
- In Clause 2, the normative references have been updated
- The former Clause 6 is now Clause 7
