What is ISO 12128 about?
ISO 12128 specifies dimensions for lubrication holes, grooves and pockets for bearing bushes. These dimensions can be entered, for example on drawings, using the designation examples. Their use depends in particular on the specific operating conditions.
Note: Different types of lubricant feed and distribution for plain bearing bushes made of sintered metals have not been specified due to the fact that these bushes are soaked with lubricant. Plain bearing bushes made of artificial carbon are not lubricated with oil or grease.
Who is ISO 12128 for?
ISO 12128 on lubrication holes, grooves and pockets are useful for:
- Manufacturers and designers of plain bearings
- Turbo engineering industries
- Automotive industry
- Electrical engineers
Why should you use ISO 12128?
Plain bearings are used for sliding, rotating, oscillating or reciprocating motion. Plain bearings support and guide moving components inside the engine.
ISO 12128 will assist you in assigning the various types of lubricant feed and distribution to solid and steel-backed plain bearing bushes made of copper alloys, aluminium alloys, thermosetting polymers, thermoplastics, or artificial carbon.
Taking ISO 12128-compliant guidelines into consideration, dimensions of lubricating grooves will enable you to avoid burrs and facilitate machining.
The dimensions of the lubrication holes, grooves and pockets are related to the bearing wall thickness, and standardising these with best industry practices will enable improved and consistent functionality of end-application.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 12128:2020 supersedes BS ISO 12128:2001, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 12128:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 12128:2001. These include:
- Dimension units added to tables
- Bibliography added and ISO 4379 and ISO 4383 moved from Clause 2 to the bibliography
- References correct
