What is ISO 12130-1 about?
ISO 12130-1 is the first part in the multi-series on plain bearings, that is applicable to plain bearings on hydrodynamic plain tilting pad thrust bearings under steady-state conditions.
ISO 12130-1 specifies a calculation method for oil-lubricated hydrodynamic plain bearings with
complete separation of the thrust collar and tilting pad thrust bearing surfaces by a film of lubricant.
Note 1: ISO 12130-1 applies to plain thrust bearings with tilting-type sliding blocks (tilting pads), where a wedge-shaped lubrication clearance gap is automatically formed during operation. The ratio of width to length of one pad can be varied in the range B/L = 0,5 to 2.
Note 2: ISO 12130-1 is not applicable to heavily loaded tilting pad thrust bearings.
NOTE 3: Equivalent calculation procedures exist that enable operating conditions to be estimated and checked against acceptable conditions. The use of them is equally admissible.
Who is ISO 12130-1 for?
ISO 12130-1 on tilting pad thrust bearings is relevant to:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of tilting pad thrust bearings
- Manufacturers of engines, compressors and steam turbines
- Power plants
- Turbo engineering industries
- Electrical and civil engineers
Why should you use ISO 12130-1?
Plain bearings are mechanical components that support a load while permitting sliding or rotational motion between two machine parts. Their primary purpose is to avoid the wear of the machine's support points, which would occur if the shafts were to roll directly on the framework.
The goal of the ISO 12130-1 is to use a calculating approach for oil-lubricated hydrodynamic plain bearings with complete separation of the thrust collar and plain bearing surfaces by a lubricant film, to produce designs of plain bearings that are dependable in operation.
The method can be used to design and optimise plain thrust bearings for fans, gear units, pumps, turbines, electric machines, compressors, and machine tools, for example.
Overall, ISO 12130-1 allows for an in-depth assessment and calculation that vital to determine the extent of power loss, friction, axial load, that has a significant impact on overall performance of the end-application. Ultimately, ISO 12130-1 can be your one-stop guide for design, optimisation and product development needs.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 12130-1:2021 supersedes ISO 12130-1:2010. BS ISO 12130-1:2021 has been technically revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- Addition of Introduction
- Correction of numerical values in Table A.5
- Adjustment to ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2:2018
- Correction of typographical errors
