What is ISO 12140‑1 about?
ISO 12140‑1 is the first part of the ISO 12140 multi-series. ISO 12140‑1 is an International standard for quality assessment. ISO 12140‑1 deals with design safety, test methods and acceptance criteria for agricultural trailers and trailed equipment, specifically drawbar jacks.
ISO 12140‑1 specifies criteria for construction, performance test methods and acceptance criteria for telescopic mechanical screw and nut-type drawbar jacks and hydraulic drawbar jacks intended to be fitted on the implement tongue of interchangeable towed machinery as original equipment or as replacement jacks. ISO 12140‑1 also specifies minimum markings and information for use to be provided by the jack manufacturer.
ISO 12140‑1 approved jacks are used for supporting the hitch points of implements during storage, lifting and lowering of implement tongues to facilitate attaching to or disconnecting from an agricultural tractor and levelling an implement for stationary use.
Who is ISO 12140‑1 for?
ISO 12140‑1 on design criteria for drawbar jacks is applicable to:
- Manufacturers of agricultural trailers and trailer equipment
- Quality control personnel
- Dealers and importers of agricultural trailers and trailer equipment
Why should you use ISO 12140‑1?
A trailer drawbar jack is a mechanism that is installed on the front of the trailer, it does the simple yet important job of lifting and lowering the front of your trailer. It facilitates connecting and disconnecting trailer from your tow vehicle which is impossible to do physically. Any defects or quality issues in the drawbar jack could affect its functionality.
ISO 12140‑1 provides you with extensive information on design requirements, performance requirements for drawbar jacks. ISO 12140‑1 also provides you with test methods to verify that these requirements are met. With the guidance of ISO 12140‑1 you can identify the loading capacity, tensile strength and corrosion resistance of drawbar jacks. ISO 12140‑1 will also help you to inform your consumers about the drawbar jacks features by providing you the marking and labelling guidelines. This helps them to choose the appropriate products as per their requirements.
ISO 12140‑1 ensures your drawbar jacks meet the specified quality requirements and improve the quality of your overall product.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 12140‑1:2020 supersedes BS ISO 12140:2013, which is now withdrawn.
Changes in BS ISO 12140‑1:2020 include:
- The application requirements have been moved to a separate part (i.e., ISO 12140‑2)
- The term used for describing machinery types has been clarified
