What is ISO 12168‑1 - Hydrostatic plain journal bearings about?
ISO 12168 is an International Standard that discusses plain bearings.
ISO 12168‑1 is the first part in the multi-series that specifies a calculation method of oil-lubricated plain journal bearings without drainage grooves under steady-state conditions.
ISO 12168‑1 applies to hydrostatic plain journal bearings under steady-state conditions.
In ISO 12168‑1, only bearings without oil drainage grooves between the recesses are taken into account.
Who is ISO 12168‑1 - Hydrostatic plain journal bearings for?
ISO 12168‑1 on hydrostatic plain journal bearings without drainage grooves under steady-state conditions is useful for:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of hydrostatic plain journal bearings
- Industries including, but not limited to power generation, oil and gas and chemical processing
- Manufacturers of industrial machinery and tools
- Electrical engineers
- Mechanical engineers
Why should you use ISO 12168‑1- Hydrostatic plain journal bearings?
The functioning of hydrostatic bearings is characterized by the fact that the supporting pressure of the bearing is generated by external lubrication. The special advantages of hydrostatic bearings are lack of wear, quiet running, wide useable speed range as well as high stiffness and damping capacity. These properties are also the reason for the special importance of hydrostatic bearing units in different fields of application such as machine tools.
The bases of calculation described in ISO 12168-1 apply to bearings with different numbers of recesses and different width/diameter ratios for identical recess geometry.
Calculation within the meaning of ISO 12168-1 is the mathematical determination of the operational parameters of hydrostatic plain journal bearings as a function of operating conditions, bearing geometry and lubrication data. This can assist you in determining eccentricity, load-carrying capacity, stiffness, needed feed pressure, oil flow rate, frictional and pumping power, and temperature rise. Furthermore, ISO 12168-1 contains the design of the required lubrication system including the calculation of the restrictor data.
If you are a manufacturer or product design engineer, compliance with approximation formulae in ISO 12168-1 can provide you with all the parameters required for the design or calculation of bearings. Accuracy and precision for calculation and design can enable you to build products that ensure features of low friction and wear and overall bearing optimization.
