What is ISO 12614‑8 about?
Excess flow valves (EFVs) are mechanical safety devices used in vehicles with a liquefied natural gas fuel system. They automatically stop or limit the flow of gas from a broken system to significantly reduce the risk of natural gas fire, explosion, personal injury, and/or property damage.
ISO 12614‑8 is part eight of the standard series that specifies tests and requirements for the excess flow valve, a liquefied natural gas fuel system component intended for use in the types of motor vehicles defined in ISO 3833. Its guidance is applicable to vehicles using natural gas in accordance with ISO 15403‑1 (mono-fuel, bi-fuel, or dual-fuel applications).
ISO 12614‑8 provides requirements for two different valve designs: internal and external excess flow valves. A valve of either design could be one of two different types: shut-off or flow-limiter.
NOTE-
ISO 12614‑8 is not applicable to the following:
- Fuel containers
- Stationary gas engines
- Container mounting hardware
- Electronic fuel management
- Refueling receptacles
Who is ISO 12614‑8 for?
ISO 12614‑8 on LNG fuel system components is applicable to:
- Manufacturers of LNG vehicles
- Manufacturers of the excess flow valve
- Vehicle regulatory authorities
- Vehicle repair shops
Why should you use ISO 12614‑8?
Good quality fuel system components are very important for the safe and efficient functioning of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicle. The specifications given in ISO 12614‑8 enable businesses to produce high-quality excess fuel valves that stop or limit the flow of natural gas from a vehicle's cylinder in an accident. Therefore, this standard ensures a leakage-proof and safe LNG fuel system for motor vehicles.
ISO 12614‑8 covers the materials to be used, the method for assembly, and the tests required to produce effective excess flow valves that are vital to the safety of road vehicles. This helps users manufacture durable and high-quality excess flow valves in line with industry best practices.
ISO 12614‑8 also provides marking instructions on excess flow valves. These markings allow businesses to identify and trace excess flow valves throughout the supply chain, making it easy to spot defects in performance and recall any products not working as they should.
