What is ISO 12647-8 about?
ISO 12647-8 is the eighth part of a multi series standard which specifies requirements which are used for determining the conformance of systems that produces a hard copy print directly from digital data that stimulates appearance of the prints.
ISO 12647-8 specifies the properties and associated test methods required for digital prints and printing processes in order to meet the criteria established for “validation prints”.
Note 1: Under ISO 12647-8 determining of conformance of production printing systems (digital or conventional) is not covered.
Who is ISO 12647-8 for?
ISO 12647-8 on graphic technology applies to:
- Graphic technology industry
- Manufacturer of printing systems
- Press operators
- Product design engineers
Why should you use ISO 12647-8?
Earlier in printing industry, there was a requirement for visual representation of the document being printed where the representation produced shows characteristics that simulate those of the expected printing within tight tolerances referred to as a “contract proof”. This was used as a visual aim for the press operator during printing as well as the absolute reference against which the finished production would be compared. Recently, other visualizations of the final printed product have found like the validation prints for predicting colour on production printing devices.
The test methods mentioned in ISO 12647-8 helps you in determining the appearance of your print according to the given printing conditions and thus, helps in testing the standard of your prints.
ISO 12647-8 helps you in meeting the criteria required for validation prints thus, enhancing the quality performance of your prints.
ISO 12647-8 helps the user in obtaining a high-quality print product, which can enhance the global acceptance and reliability of your product.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 12647-8:2021 supersedes BS ISO 126478:2012, which is withdrawn. The main changes are:
- Deletion of informative metrics which is not practical like tonality is removed
- Additon of more content oriented control wedge
- Addition of Annex A with respect to substrate categorization and conformance assessment
- Replacement of CIE 1976 ΔE*ab with modern ΔE00
- Addition of a better metric for uniformity assessment
