What is ISO 13821 about?
ISO 13821 is an international standard on corrugated fibreboard. ISO 13821 was prepared to help the user determine the durability of corrugated fireboards.
ISO 13821 specifies a method for the determination of the edgewise crush resistance of corrugated fibreboard. The force is applied in the direction of the flute axis. The method specified by ISO 13821 is applicable to single-wall (double-faced), double-wall, and triple-wall corrugated fibreboard. The test method can also be used to test samples taken from corrugated cases and other converted products.
Who is ISO 13821 for?
ISO 13821 on corrugated fibreboard is useful for:
- Corrugated fibreboard manufacturers
- Testing laboratories/ test providers for corrugated fibreboard
- Packaging companies
Why should you use ISO 13821?
Edgewise crush resistance highlights the ability of a corrugated fibreboard to maximum compressive force that a test piece will sustain before being crushed.
ISO 13821 provides you with a test method that helps you to determine how much force a corrugated fibreboard can withstand on its edges without crushing.
By using the waxed edge method and test procedures provided in ISO 13821 you can perform quality control and select appropriate materials and produce durable protective packaging.
What is changed since the last update?
BS ISO 13821:2020 supersedes ISO 13821:2002. BS ISO 13821:2020 has some technical changes. These include:
- Introduction of an additional group in the Introduction clause
- Information on sampling of corrugated shipping containers is added in Clause 6
- Information in 8.2 on the height of the test pieces
- Introduction of precision data based on TAPPI comparative testing service
